Cleaning your robot vacuum: the maintenance guide
A well-maintained robot vacuum lasts four to six years. A neglected one can lose half of its suction power in under a year — without ever breaking down, simply by choking. Here is the frequency to follow, part by part.

The main brush, every week
It's the part that picks up the most dirt — and above all hair. On a classic model, cut the hair wrapped around the ends of the axle with the tool provided. Recent anti-tangle brushes space the task out without removing it.
- Bristle brush: untangle weekly, replace every 6 months.
- Rubber brush: fewer tangles, clean every 2 weeks, replace every 12 months.
- Anti-tangle brush (DuoBrush-style): clean every 3 weeks. Watch the cost: these brushes are often proprietary, with no reliable generic equivalent.
The HEPA filter, every month
A clogged filter reduces suction and makes the motor run hot. Tap it out over a bin every week, rinse it with clean water once a month — never soap — and let it dry 24 hours before reinstalling it. Replace every 3 to 6 months, more often with a pet.
Tip. Buy filters in packs of three and rotate them: one in the robot, one drying, one in reserve. You are never forced to put a damp filter back in, and the set lasts significantly longer.
The sensors, every two weeks
Drop sensors, lidar turret and front camera get dirty and degrade navigation before they degrade cleaning: the robot misses areas, goes over others twice, returns to its dock without finishing. A dry microfibre cloth is enough. Never use window cleaner or spray: the residue attracts dust and blurs the infrared sensors.
Bins and tanks
- Dust bin: emptied after every cycle, washed with mild soap once a month, dried completely before reassembly.
- Clean water tank: rinsed every two weeks, otherwise algae settle in the circuits.
- Dirty water tank in the dock: emptied and rinsed every week. A smelly dock always comes from there.
The self-emptying dock, every two months
The bag is replaced every one to two months depending on the floor area and pets; a full bag cuts emptying power. The dock filter, behind a hatch, is dusted every three months with a cylinder vacuum. It's the consumables line to cost out before buying: €40 to €80 per year once added up.

Can you wash a robot vacuum's HEPA filter?
With clean water only, never with soap and never in a machine, and let it dry a full 24 hours before reinstalling it. A filter reinstalled while damp develops an odour and clogs faster. Plan a replacement every 3 to 6 months depending on whether you have pets.
Why is my robot vacuum sucking less well?
In order of frequency: clogged filter, full bin, brush wrapped in hair, blocked side wheel. The first three are fixed with ten minutes of maintenance. A loss of suction that persists after these checks points to a turbine or a seal at the end of its life.
Where does the washing dock smell come from?
From the dirty water tank, almost always. It is emptied and rinsed every week. Mop pads rinsed cold and poorly dried also develop an odour within a few days: it is the most common complaint about docks that don't dry with warm air.
